Success Story
Peel Regional Police
The Peel Regional Police in Ontario Canada takes a unique approach to false alarm reduction. They have had an alarm policy in effect since 1989 and have revised that policy several times since then. They do not register or permit their alarm users, and do not charge false alarm fees or fines.
The Peel Regional Police provides police services for two major cities, Brampton and Mississauga, as well as the Pearson International Airport. It covers a population of 1,025,000 and an area of 346 square miles. Peel Regional Police Service is the second largest municipal police service in Ontario and the third largest in Canada. The average household income is $79,650, which is $21,290 higher than the Canadian average and $12,814 higher than the Ontario average. Twelve percent of all households are within the low income group.
Peel Regional Police, using their unique policy, have been successful in reducing false alarms by 45%.
After the first false alarm in a one year period, Peel Police send a caution notice to the alarm user. After the second false alarm, the alarm user is notified that they are in a no response status for one year. Reinstatement is possible if the alarm user can prove remedial action has been taken. If further false alarms occur, the original suspension is placed back in effect.
Peel has been very successful using their method of false alarm reduction even with a increase in new systems of 50%.
